SURVIVING THE COLD AND FLU SEASON

It’s that time of year again, the weather is cooling, the kids are back in school, and the germs are going around. There are many things you can do to start protecting yourself for FREE right now.

Not to sound like a broken record, but hand washing with soap and water for 30 seconds regularly is one of your best defences. This eliminates most germs on your hands and lowers the risk of infection substantially.

Keep your hands away from your face. Mouth, nose and eyes are the most common routes for a virus to enter your body.  Door knobs, hand shakes, printers, faucets, point of sale machines, etc., can contaminate your hands and once you have touched your face, that virus can have a direct route inside your body.

If you are around another sick individual, especially one with the flu, ask them to wear a facemask. Most viruses are transmitted through water droplets from breathing/coughing/sneezing and can contaminate you if you are within the splash zone.

Get your 8 hours of sleep each night. A tired immune system is a weak immune system, so make it a healthy habit to get a good night sleep to enhance your immune function.

This last tip might be a tough sell, but it’s proven to improve function! Turn your morning shower into a hydrotherapy treatment, start with 2 min hot water, then turn it down as cold as you can tolerate for 30 seconds, repeat another 2 times ending on cold water. Give it a try, it’s invigorating!

What if you’ve already been exposed?

Echinacea isn’t your only option! Try slipping into as hot a bath as you can tolerate for 15-30 min. This raises your core temperature to a mild fever, activates your immune system, and helps to kill some of the virus that’s potentially gaining ground in your body. Make sure to drink lots of water while you do this and of course don’t use water hot enough to burn.

And what if you are sick already? Book an appointment with Dr.Ashley Girard ND and get a customized prescription to get over that virus faster and discuss which supplements would be best for you to prevent the next one.
