Finding the right backpack for back to school

With the kids going back to school, you are likely taking them shopping to get ready for class. One of the biggest purchases you will be making for your kids is a backpack. With all those fancy styles, it is important to follow these tips for the proper backpack to keep them healthy.

  • Find a backpack with wide straps. The wider straps will dispense the weight better and help prevent any shoulder pain or pinching.
  • Find a backpack with waist support. These backpacks that can be strapped around the hips. This will take some of the weight off the shoulders and put it on the hips, creating a balanced load.
  • Find a backpack with side supports. This can be difficult but if you can find a backpack that has side support to keep the bag from collapsing/crumping, it will dispense the weight properly between the shoulders and the hips.
  • Find a backpack with multiple pockets. Having multiple pockets will allow the weight to be dispensed over a larger area, preventing a large portion of the weight from being in one spot.
  • Pack the heaviest objects closer to the body. Keeping the heavy objects closer to the body will decrease the moment arm. This is why 5lbs feels lighter when you hold it close to your body rather than far away.
  • Avoid using only one strap. This has been proven to affect posture and results in shoulder and back problems.
  • Do not over pack. Packing the bag heavier than 15% of your child’s body weight causes excessive muscle activation and a forward lean. This forward lean can affect posture and result in neck and back problems.

Back to school can be an exciting time. If you follow the tips above, you can help save your child’s neck and back.
